Sector rotation is the movement of money between parts of the market as conditions change — out of defensives into cyclicals as growth expectations rise, and back again when they fall. The table below ranks all eleven GICS sectors by relative strength against the S&P 500, using each sector's SPDR ETF as its proxy, as of September 15, 2026.
Relative strength is the sector's return minus the benchmark's over the same window: a positive figure means the sector beat the index, not that it rose. A sector can lead while falling, which is exactly the signal rotation analysis exists to surface. Money flow is a volume-weighted measure of buying against selling pressure over the month. Rank change compares today's relative strength ranking with the prior reading.
